Hospice was designed to care for a patient/family for at least 6 months or longer

Myth: 
Hospice is giving up hope and succumbing to illness …

Truth: 
Hospice will help aggressively manage your pain and symptoms.  We are hope for many families struggling to cope by providing social, emotional and spiritual support. Under hospice you will receive instructions on care, an explaination of what to expect and our registered nurse is always on-call.   

Myth: 
Hospice uses morphine to accelerate loss of life…

Truth:  
Hospice uses medication like morphine when recommended by a medical doctor for pain/symptom control based on the illness, symptoms and type of  pain.  The objective is to use the correct medication and amount so that a patient is not in pain while preserving independence as much as possible.

Myth: 
Hospice costs Medicare billions of dollars…

Truth:  
Medicare supports hospice care because it is affordable—it costs less than frequent hospitalizations/emergency room visits.

Myth: 
Once enrolled in hospice care the patient can no longer go to the doctor…

Truth: 
Medicare will still pay for any covered benefits not related to the hospice diagnosis.  The hospice provider will explain what is related and what is not related.
